What is a Workplace Safety Assessment?
A workplace safety assessment measures your safety system against what the law actually requires, then shows you where it holds up and where it falls short. SafeAlign runs that assessment against the WHS Act and ISO 45001 across 10 elements, and scores every one of them green, amber or red.
That is a different job from a walk-around. An inspection tells you a machine was checked on Tuesday. An assessment tells you whether the system around that check meets your obligations.
Most businesses we meet are confident about their safety paperwork. Far fewer can point to where their system meets the WHS Act and where it doesn’t.
So you stop assuming and start measuring. A score, a set of named gaps, and an order to work in.
An Assessment, an Audit and an Inspection are Not the Same Thing
Three words get used interchangeably on Australian worksites, and the difference matters when you’re working out what you actually need.
- Inspection. A point-in-time check of a place, a task or a piece of plant. It records what someone saw on the day. Useful, and it tells you nothing about the system behind it.
- External audit. A qualified assessor examines your system in depth, usually once a year, often against ISO 45001 or a certification scheme. Thorough, and the picture starts ageing the day they walk out.
- Assessment. A structured measure of your safety system against your obligations, run by you, as often as you want it. This is the one that answers "where do we stand right now?"
SafeAlign is the third. If you’re chasing ISO 45001 certification, it doesn’t replace your auditor. What it does is stop you spending the eleven months in between guessing.
How a SafeAlign Assessment Works
Your team answers guided questions on their phones, on site, where the work happens. Not blank forms to fill in later. Not a training day. Not a laptop in the lunchroom.
The questions weren’t written by a software company. They come from people who have spent 25 years assessing Australian workplaces, so they’re the ones an experienced assessor would ask if they were standing next to you.
You review the results on desktop, with the whole business in one view.
1. Identify Safety Gaps
- Answer structured questions aligned with the WHS Act and ISO 45001 standards.
- Receive a safety score and highlight potential risks.
2. Get Actionable Reports
- SafeAlign delivers data-driven reports on 10 key safety elements.
- Clear traffic light indicators and dashboards show areas that need attention.
3. Implement & Improve
- Turn insights into real-world safety measures.
- Integrate reports into regular safety reviews and continuous improvement plans.
4. Reduce Risks & Costs
- A safer workplace means fewer injuries, fewer fines, and better efficiency.
Ten Elements, One Score
Ten elements is the whole framework. Not fifty modules to configure, not a dashboard you have to design yourself. Every part of your safety system sits inside one of ten areas, and each area gets a score and a colour.
Green holds up. Amber needs attention. Red needs attention first.
The value isn’t the colour. It’s that ten is a number you can finish. A business sitting on three ambers and a red knows exactly what the next quarter looks like.
Say an assessment comes back with seven greens, two ambers and one red. The red is where you start, because it’s the element with the widest distance between what the WHS Act expects and what your system can currently show. Under the colour sits the detail: which questions scored badly, and what closing them looks like.
The ambers become next quarter’s work. The greens get re-checked next time, because a green that’s twelve months old isn’t really a green.
That prioritisation is the part most businesses are missing. Not the willingness to fix things. The order to fix them in.
FAQs
Does SafeAlign cover the WHS laws in my state?
SafeAlign assesses your business against the WHS Act, the model work health and safety law adopted across most Australian states and territories, alongside ISO 45001, which applies anywhere.
Is a SafeAlign assessment the same as an external WHS audit?
No. An external audit is an in-depth examination by a qualified assessor, usually annual, and often tied to certification. A SafeAlign workplace safety assessment is one you run yourself, as often as you like, to see your compliance position across 10 elements between those audits.
Is SafeAlign suitable for a small business without a safety manager?
Yes. SafeAlign was built for businesses without a full-time safety team: 10 elements, one score, and setup done for you. A small business sees the same clear traffic-light position a large one does, without anyone having to become a software administrator.
Does a workplace safety assessment help with officer due diligence?
Under the WHS Act, officer due diligence is personal and can’t be delegated. SafeAlign records every assessment, review and fix as it happens, building a timestamped record that you took active, informed steps on safety: the kind of evidence regulators and courts examine.
What do we need to have ready before our first assessment?
One form. You fill in your details, we build your system around your business, and you go live with support behind you. There’s no configuration project and nothing for your team to set up.
